Vernier Hook Point Gauges

Vernier Hook Point Gauges

The measurement of steady state water surface position is frequently needed during hydraulic investigations. This is done by using a small point or hook manually adjusted to touch the water surface, and a reading is taken of the vertical movement using a scale or vernier.

A mounting frame is clamped to a suitable support structure and a gauging rod is free to slide up and down over the water surface. A stainless steel hook or point is attached to the bottom end of the rod and is used to locate the water surface.

Gauging is carried out by means of a primary scale attached to the mounting frame and a vernier scale attached to the rod. The scales are in edge contact.

The rod is held in a screwed collar for fine adjustment and can be released for large, rapid changes of position. Zero can be reset by a locking screw positioned on the vernier scale.

Tripod Stands

This stand is suitable for use with vernier type Hook & Point gauges
and the Pitot Tubes. It is essential for the convenient use of the gauges in physical models.

A mounting tripod constructed from aluminium alloy is supported on three stainless steel rods secured by thumbscrews. The rods are adjustable allowing the stand to be made level.

Levelling is assisted by use of a 'Bullseye' spirit level mounted on the top plate.

A carrier plate mounted on the tripod supports the gauge. The whole assembly may be adjusted for height on the support rods.

The includes all the features of the  but includes mountings and a clamp plate to make it suitable for other instruments, i.e. the Digital Hook and Point gauges and the micropropeller used on

Drainage And Seepage Tank

Drainage And Seepage Tank

Practical demonstration and visualisation are essential elements of fluid flow study.
This Drainage and Seepage Tank has been designed to allow students to make an experimental study of flow through permeable media.

A self-contained facility for study of flow through permeable media. The tank has a toughened glass front and aluminium back to permit the insertion of pressure tappings as required. Six tapping points are provided. The design of the side suports allows free access to the interior with minimum sight obstruction. Supply includes sump tank, pump, starter and control valve. Also a dye injection system and a selection of models.

Comprehensive instruction manual with data sheets and student experiments.

Mobile Bed And Flow Visualisation Tank

Practical demonstration and visualisation are essential elements of fluid flow study. This Armfield unit may be used in two principal fields of study. The first involves detailed investigation of mobile bed situations. These may be in relation to water courses or civil engineering structures. The second field involves two dimensional flow visualisation. This may be undertaken using the Ahlborn (c.1902) dust indicator technique or by any other suitable method of flow visualisation. > Mobile bed experiments > Flow around model engineering structures > Experimental investigation of erosion and deposition > Characteristics of meandering water courses > Two dimensional flow visualisation by the Ahlborn technique > Boundary layer suction demonstration > Velocity distribution in duct flow > Hydraulic analogy to compressible flow > Civil engineering model testing A: Two dimensional flow pattern on surface of water around cylinders using dust, illustrating Karman Vortices. B: Erosion in sand bed around a square pier. C: Erosion in sand bed around cylindrical pier. D: Three dimensional flow pattern on bed of table around a square pier using dye crystals. E: Right angle branch on canal. The illustration shows the two dimensional surface flow pattern in the form of streaks as well as the three dimensional flow pattern along the bed Working area: 2 metres x 610mm or 4 metres x 610mm Max water depth: 120mm Thickness of sand bed: 60mm Flow range: 0-3.5 litres/sec Sump capacity: 300 litres Accuracy of flow metering: ±1.5% of full scale deflection.

MKII Sediment Transport Demonstration Channel

MKII Sediment Transport Demonstration Channel

This improved version of the Armfield sediment transport teaching facility allows demonstration of the full range of bedforms that arise in a mobile bed as the flow and/or slope are increased.

The channel can be used to perform most of the experiments and demonstrations usually undertaken in much larger laboratory flumes, but at much lower cost and without the need for technician back-up. The equipment is portable, and therefore may be used in the classroom as well as in the laboratory. Although too small for research applications, this demonstration flume can play a useful role in any course concerning the mechanics of open channel flow and sediment transport, including those in Departments of Civil Engineering, Geology and Physical Geography.

A transparent, inclinable flow channel through which water can be re-circulated by a pump over a mobile bed to demonstrate the whole range of bedforms from incipient particle movement to bed wash-out.

• Three different discharge rates can be selected (and measured) within the range 0.2 to 0.6 litres/sec.

• The channel slope can be adjusted within the range 0-10%.

• The working section of the channel is 1.55m long, 78mm wide and
110mm deep.

• The equipment is self-contained and may be bench-mounted in either the classroom or laboratory by virtue of its portability.

• A model undershot weir and bridge pier are included for local erosion demonstrations.

• A water level gauge is supplied to calibrate the overshot weir.

FIXED, SMOOTH BED FLOW
The flume may be used without sediment on the bed to demonstrate the following flow phenomena and governing equations:

> Tranquil, sub-critical flow - movement of surface waves upstream against flow
> Rapid, super-critical flow - dominance of intertial over gravity forces, 'shock waves' from flow obstructions
> Hydraulic jump - transition from super to sub critical flow, air entrainment, mixing
> Turbulence - flow visualisation for example by dye injection from a hypodermic syringe (not supplied)
> Flow measurement - using sharp crested weirs
> Governing equations of open channel flow -
Reynolds' number, Froude number, continuity, Bernoulli's equation, weir equations

Rainfall Hydrographs

This apparatus sets out to demonstrate, on a small scale, some of the physical processes found in hydrology. These fall into two related categories: the relationship between rainfall and runoff from catchment areas of variable permeability and the abstraction of ground water by wells, with or without surface recharge from rainfall. Thus it is concerned with that part of the hydrological cycle bounded by the arrival of 'net rainfall' on the ground surface and the catchment runoff by surface streams.

• A unit designed to obtain catchment rainfall and runoff values as functions of time.

• Comprising a bench- or floor-standing tank with two overhead square pattern spray nozzles supplying water via a flow control valve, flow meter and solenoid valve.

• A motor driven traversing vessel with seventeen compartments is moved by timer beneath the outlet at a preselected rate to collect the runoff and provide an immediate display of the hydrograph.

• The tank is 1.2m in length x 0.8m wide x 0.2m deep.

• The flow range is 0.4 to 4.4 litres/minute.

• A comprehensive user manual is included in the supply.

Tank dimensions:
Length: 1.2m
Width: 0.6m
Height: 0.2m
Flow meter range: 0.4 - 4.4 litres/min
Runoff collector: 17 x 0.5l compartments.
