VCR Engine Test Setup

VCR Engine Test Setup 1 Cylinder 4 Stroke Diesel (Computerized)

The setup consists of single cylinder, four stroke, VCR (Variable Compression Ratio) Diesel engine connected to eddy current type dynamometer for loading. The compression ratio can be changed without stopping the engine and without altering the combustion chamber geometry by specially designed tilting cylinder block arrangement.

Setup is provided with necessary instruments for combustion pressure and crank-angle measurements. These signals are interfaced to computer through engine indicator for  diagrams. Provision is also made for interfacing airflow, fuel flow, temperatures and load measurement. The set up has stand-alone panel box consisting of air box, two fuel tanks for duel fuel test, manometer, fuel measuring unit, transmitters for air and fuel flow measurements, process indicator and engine indicator. Rotameters are provided for cooling water and calorimeter water flow measurement.

The setup enables study of VCR engine performance for brake power, indicated power, frictional power, BMEP, IMEP, brake thermal efficiency, indicated thermal efficiency, Mechanical efficiency, volumetric efficiency, specific fuel consumption, A/F ratio and heat balance. Labview based Engine Performance Analysis software package "Enginesoft is provided for on line performance evaluation. A computerized Diesel injection pressure measurement is optionally provided.

Gas Turbine Test Rig

The Gas Turbine test rig will have at least the following units 

  • Turbocharger Assembly:  Composed of centrifugal compressor (in light alloy) and turbine (in cast iron) with the following features: operating at maximum compression ratio of about 2 : 1. operating at a  speed of approx. 30,000 to 50,000 r.p.m
  • Combustion Chamber :  Shall consist of an external chamber and a flame tube mounted inside it.  The combustion chamber will have such designed that there is even distribution of heat and there are no over heating points.  The turbine which starts compressor will be a centrifugal machine with 75mm dia.
  • Power Turbine Group:  The Rotor assembly of the turbine will be perfectly balanced and will have arrangement for continuous lubrication.  The larger turbine will attain a maximum speed of 2,000 to 23,000 r.p.m and the turbine power will be transmitted to the alternator by the means of toothed belt having transmission ration of 1 : 4.28 producing approx. 1.KW at  3,300 rpm.
  • Fuel System:  The Turbine will be able to work on Propane or L.P.G.

The following will also be provided with the  Gas Turbine set up 
  • 'U' shaped manometer to measure turbine air consumption.

  • The system will be supplied with automatic safety device to prevent over speeding.
  • The unit will have an automatic closed circuit pressurized lubrication system along with tube nest oil cooler for cooling the oil.

    • Automatic / Manual regulation of cooling water.
    • Luminous signal for gas solenoid valve operation.
  • The gas turbine should be capable of conducting the following experiments
    • Study of a Joule-Brayton cycle
    • Study on a reduced scale of a plant for the production of electrical energy by a gas turbine
    • Study of the starting procedure of a gas turbine
    • Measurement of the air flow input as a function of the speed of the turbocharger
    • Pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber as a function of the speed of the turbocharger

Description
The setup consists of single cylinder, four stroke, VCR (Variable Compression Ratio) Research engine connected to eddy current dynamometer. It is provided with necessary instruments for combustion pressure, crank-angle, airflow, fuel flow, temperatures and load measurements. These signals are interfaced to computer through high speed data acquisition. The set up has stand-alone panel box consisting of air box, twin fuel tank for duel fuel test, manometer, fuel measuring unit, transmitters for air and fuel flow measurements, process indicator and piezo powering unit. Rotameters are provided for cooling water and calorimeter water flow measurement. 

The setup enables study of VCR engine performance for both Diesel and Petrol, for brake power, indicated power, frictional power, BMEP, IMEP, brake thermal efficiency, indicated thermal efficiency, Mechanical efficiency, volumetric efficiency, specific fuel consumption, Air fuel ratio, heat balance and combustion analysis.

Engine
Single cylinder four stroke, water cooled, Kirloskar engine modified to VCR Diesel and VCR Petrol. The compression ratio can be changed without stopping the engine and without altering the combustion chamber geometry by specially designed tilting cylinder block arrangement is made to run engine in constant speed and variable speed mode. Facility for Diesel injection point and spark point advancement is provided. Engine is with electric starting arrangement.

Software
Engine Soft is Lab view based software developed by Apex Innovations for engine performance monitoring system. It can serve most of the engine testing application needs including monitoring, reporting, data entry, data logging. It evaluates power, efficiencies, fuel consumption and heat release. It is configurable as per engine set up.

While on line testing of the engine in RUN mode necessary signals are scanned, stored and presented in graph. Stored data file is accessed to view the data graphical and tabular formats. The results and graphs can be printed. The data in excel format can be used for further analysis.

The setup consists of three cylinder, four stroke, petrol (MPFI) engine connected to Eddy current/ hydraulic dynamometer for engine loading. The setup has stand-alone type independent panel box consisting of air box, fuel tank, manometer, fuel measuring unit, digital speed indicator and digital temperature indicator. Engine jacket cooling water inlet, outlet and calorimeter temperature is displayed on temperature indicator. Rotameters are provided for cooling water and calorimeter flow measurement.

The setup enables study of engine for brake power, BMEP, brake thermal efficiency, volumetric efficiency, specific fuel consumption, air fuel ratio and heat balance. Provision is also made for conducting Morse test. Set up is supplied with MS Excel program for Engine Performance Analysis.

Software

EngineSoftLV is Labview based software package developed by Apex Innovations Pvt. Ltd. for engine performance monitoring system. EngineSoftLV can serve most of the engine testing application needs including monitoring, reporting, data entry, data logging.

The software evaluates power, efficiencies, fuel consumption and heat release. It is configurable as per engine set up. Various graphs are obtained at different operating

The test rig consists of a single stage impulse turbine suitable equipment for performing experiments to measure the steam turbine efficiency, steam quality, flow rate and condenser effectiveness.

Accessories:

Flowmeter, separating and throttling calorimeter, condenser assembly including a condenser water pump, suitable piping and control valve - to connect the turbine with the flowmeter and calorimeter to the boiler, necessary thermocouples and temperature indicator and pressure gauges to measure steam conditions, a digital tachometer to monitor the turbine speed

Loading Device:
The steam turbine is directly coupled to an alternator for loading.
Optional loading: Eddy current dynamometer
Operating Conditions:
Power produced by the Altech EST test rig depends upon the inlet steam conditions and exhaust conditions.
  • Larger capacity turbine produces 3KW power output for 600 kg/hour 10 bar saturated conditions.
  • Smaller capacity turbine produces 1KW power output for 300Kg/hour and 0.5KW for 200kg/hour 10 bar saturated conditions.

The setup consists of single cylinder, four stroke, Diesel engine connected to eddy current / Hydraulic type dynamometer for loading. It is provided with necessary instruments for combustion pressure and crank-angle measurements. These signals are interfaced to computer through engine indicator for PQ - PV diagrams. 

Provision is also made for interfacing airflow, fuel flow, temperatures and load measurement. The set up has stand-alone panel box consisting of air box, fuel tank, manometer, fuel measuring unit, transmitters for air and fuel flow measurements, process indicator and engine indicator. Rotameters are provided for cooling water and calorimeter water flow measurement.

The setup enables study of engine performance for brake power, indicated power, frictional power, BMEP, IMEP, brake thermal efficiency, indicated thermal efficiency, Mechanical efficiency, volumetric efficiency, specific fuel consumption, A/F ratio and heat balance. Labview based Engine Performance Analysis software package "EnginesoftLV" is provided for on line performance evaluation. A computerized Diesel injection pressure measurement is optionally provided.
